I find it interesting searching through different websites and reading bio's... seeing familiar names of racers, some here, some not with us anymore and also the familiar boats... brings back alot of good memories. I read some bio's and was surprise to see some.. not many at all mind you, taking glory for a race that they did not run...meaning, someone else was driving their boat. Should it not be the one driving who gets the glory??? (the title) ::eek:

You have a good point there. It's the owner that puts up the money to get a boat to run up front. Usually lots of it. And the time to do the testing and transporting the rig. However when the clock hand hits zero it's the the man holding the wheel and squeezing the throttle that has final responsibility in what happens. I own and drive my boats so I don't have to worry about it. And if I don't run well I know exactly who to blame.

On the other hand, there are those drivers who win with equipment that isn't theirs! That was my situation. I never gave Greg Garber enough credit for supplying me with a nice new Pugh hydro and two new Yamato RA-1 engines.....

I won 2 High Point Titles, and a National Championship with my own hands and wallet ( Dad and Mom helped too :) )
I broke my leg one year, and had others drive my rigs, and in the later years, when my back was giving me alot of trouble, I had others drive too.
A driver named Paul Guerin used to drive for me when I wasn't up to the challenge physically. I would pay the entry fee, and the fuel etc.-----If trophies of plaques were awarded, they were his. If it was money, it was mine. That was the agreement we made.
The owner always sprung for the beer though, win or lose !!

When the time comes for me to hang up my helmet, I'll find someone who wants to drive the best equipment that I can supply. I'm always willing to let someone who wants to try this sport have a ride in one of my boats. I remember the first ride I ever took and how it made me feel that day. Now many years later I can still remember the thrill when the boat came on plane. That was a mere 51 years ago. And I thank the man that made it possible to for me to take that ride. It's my thought that if you own a rig that wins with someone else driving, it should be OK to take credit but you should also give credit for a winning performance to the person that drove to the finish line too.

The “sponsorship” theme should be another thread. It is kind of interesting and a lot can be written about it…. I’ll write about my experience an start another thread.

It still amazes me to think someone would take credit for a race they did not run. Does he not think others know as well??? Quite interesting indeed.....
