I just took a very hard slap shot to the ankle and all I could think was, I hope it is not broken I have too much work to do in the basement (engine work)! I tried to skate more... a hockey player kind of thing, but I could not go on. As I took off my skate and saw the swelling, I thought again No winter Nationals (it was to be my first). I hoped it was not broken.

I waited one full day for swelling and pain, thinking I hope it is not broken I have cranks to bevel. I get it exrayed... It is broken!!!

I never thought about my safety or surgery or anything else but Juli and Boat racing.

I now feel I am a boat racer. The bad part is I don't think there is a cure for thinking like this?

Good luck all!!!

Brian,
Sorry to hear about your deal. The same thing happend to a guy I played with in High School. Slap shot to the ankle.

But look at the bright side, if the bad luck had to happen, it is best in the winter. I broke my hand and wrist at the 2000 Mod Nationals in Alex KY on Friday during qualifing. I had qualified in one class before the wreck, so I tried to make a go at it. Complete disaster! Should have stayed on the beach. Was the usual bull head boat racer and didn't get it checked out. Spent the weekend with my hand in a cooler and popping 800mg motrin that I was given by everyone who had bad backs (and there were quite a few of them).

Worse was the Dr telling me it was broken and I was on the shelf for 6-8 weeks. I missed at least 6 races that year and just barely made the season finale (had to bribe just about everyone to do it).

Good luck and fast healing!

One time ,long ago, before you guys were born,Idropped a 90lb stainless bar on my foot.It broke all the toes in my left foot.Big race the next weekend,so I made a steel toe piece for an old pair of shoes and raced anyhow. The race was in the Chesapeake Bay and the waves were 2 to 3 feet. My foot only hurt a little ,but the toe piece tore up the bottom of the boat.
Advice.....Do exactly as the doctors and therapists say and do all the rehab and you will be ready when the season starts. This is t
the voice of experence.
Good luck
