What kind of lower unit are you running now?
Why Mercury gears? Did you have a run of gear made or are they NOS?

Chenny,
I used a Merc 44XS gearcase under my FE for many years, in fact MY dad ran the same unit for all his FE years. Not a lot of trouble with it, gears every couple years and she was good to go. One thing to note, back then, we did not have the torque and speeds we have, and what you are seeing today. At the very least, I suggest laser cutting a hole through the gear, and shaft and pinning it. We do that with all our lower unit gears, except the Bass. Have not had any gear trouble with that yet. Yamato spiral gears, at least one set a year, even pinned, Inson foot, no trouble yet, but not ran much either.
Just my experience with units. Post some picks of your unit, I might be interested, or email them to me.
Also, Steve Rowskoski had a new prototype I looked over real hard, it looks like it will be a good one to, I don't think they ar ein production yet, Steve ??

David,
My job has been getting more and more consuming. I still have the patterns sitting on a bench in the workshop. I will get to it as soon as I can and get a couple on the water to check them out. I have just enough Merc foot stuff to keep me going, so it hasn't been mission critical yet. I do have a direct fire CD ignition in the works though that will be simple easy and hopefully keep the old 30-H up with some yamato's this year!
