View Full Version : Boats Under Construction ...
Dr. Thunder

I've found the 3 CSH's thread to be interesting ... why not have a new forum here for info relating to any and all new race boats under construction ... pictures of progress posted etc. Might be kinda fun to keep track of who is building what and where ... how many new boats and in what classes were being produced ...
Anybody have any idea as to how many boats any one builder has had under construction at the same time ... not counting Swift, Marchetti's or Sids (although it might be interesting to know historically how many boats those boys might have had in production at any one time in their heyday) ...

Here are some of the Sorensen kits being built now:
Steve Hearn is building Ed an ASR
George Jenkins in building grandson Nick an ASR
Rob Wilkins is building Brian Lauer a DSR
Dave Umbarger is building a 25SSR
Pete Schaub a new driver from Cincinnati is building a CSR marathon boat for Top'O
I am building Lonnie Morris a FEH.
Anyone interested in a "Jackal" ASR boat or kit I can deliver to the winter nationals in Bakersfield.

I saw some of Darrell's "A" Runabout Kits....
Let me say this....very cool... He actually puts the kits together without glue....Then, when you buy a kit, he takes it apart and sends you the pieces...ANY new boat builder or interested person could build one of Darrell's kits.
What ever he charges, isn't enough.
Post a picture of the kits in your "BARN"....
ADD,
Darrell gives freely of his time..... So, if you get stuck building one of his kit, you have an EXPERT to call...
Swift made clothes pins before they built boats. Their original logo was a clothes pin. I probably have a quote somewhere of howmany boats Swift built in a day or a week, but I don't recall without looking it up. Total production of Swift hydros was around 5,000. By far the most popular raceboat of all time.

Yamato has Swift beat, in just the last 3 years. 40 employes, 1800 para-mutual boats a year. They have been doing it since about 1950.

Sam, I have always wondered why you don't see many of the old Swift hydros ( Atomic A's, Big Bee's Big D's ) around like some of the other boats of the 50's early 60's? Granted, wood boats that old usually don't survive 40 years or more. I know Len is building some Sid Craft hydros, and another person has all of the original patterns for all of the sid hydros ( with no interest in sharing or selling any plans ). Are there any plans out there for any of the Swift hydros? What did Joe Swift do with all of this? Anybody???

All Swifts were nailed together with monel anchor nails... (Don't know how to spell monel (might have been a brand name) But each nail had an anchor on the head. They were light nails.....
Not sure if the nails caused them to fall apart, but most Swifts that I knew of met the "Bonfire"... They didn't cost much, really, cloth decks....when you stuffed one it was history..
Most were used too much when they were new.

I have a "D" Roper in the finishing stages and then I have a "d" Scott/Craft to build for Bill Keegan and then a 25/C Sorenson Kit to build following that.
The Sorenson 25 and a 25XS will be for sale following completion and testing. E-mail me for details.

Will post some pics of the roper soon.

I hope to have a new 250 delivered from the Knoxville boat works in February. I have seen Brandon Thirlby's new 125 and it is a beauty (also from Gary's shop). Brandon's dad is expecting a new 500/700 capsule from Gary as well. Nic Thompson recently took delivery of his new 250 Pugh. Hopefully it will fare better than his last two rides at Lakeland come the first weekend of April.
When the sheep will let him out of the barn (it is a cold winter in Iowa Mike says), I know Mike Krier is working on a number of runabouts for the coming season.

I've got a new AXS hydro in the works. Just started cutting frames etc..... hope to have it on the jig in few weeks (work permitting!)
Just finished applying the primer, time to wet sand....Hopefully have it painted by this Sunday evening. (Now that the PACK is out I can put in a full day on Sunday) It's coming together nicely!

Brent, is Bob Trolian still building RaceCraft boats ... any idea how much an ASR would sell for ... and, how long a wait to get delivery on one?
Yes, Bob still builds many boats. He is located in Alexandria, Ky. I know that the C boat he built for me was the last big runabout he plans to build. He did state to me that he is going to continue to build both A & B boats both hydros & runabouts. Give him a call #859-448-9679.

If you are impatient like me and dont want to wait for Bob to build you a new ASR I know of a brand new one sitting in a garage in Pittsburgh. Mike Lloyd has an ad in the classifieds on Trora.com. He has severe back damage (from gymnastics in college, not ASR) and cannot race it any longer. I think he may have only raced it once or twice. Good luck.

Dan,
With your OPC background, you probably wouldn't have as much trouble as you think. I've had a couple of tunnel boat drivers and one tunnel boat builder that used to race kneelers tell me that the tunnels were more like runabouts than hydros. Sure doesn't look like it to me, but that's what the guys that have raced both tell me. They were talking about real runabouts though. Looks to me like anyone that can drive a hydro should be able to drive one of those things they call runabouts now.

Dean this one is an ASH/AXH boat and is a Fralick design. That was my Dad that won ASH in 62 after wading threw 137 A hydros as he wasnt quailfied. He passed away in 1993. Im going to run this one and the other two Im building, Amod and BSH they are Fralick design to. I havent raced since 1979 but have been in hydros on the lake when I get the chance. Augustine Racing is building 2 boats at this time,125H ang CSH,for Gary and Sean.We had lots of help today and will put the bottom on the 125 on Mon.We would be further along but I have been making a lot of the parts.Weused all of Pops leftover wood and then all of Bill Huson's and still have to buy more framing wood if we can find it.There is no Sidka or Obeche in DC.
Note to MJR: Its harder to build one with curved cockpit sides.
But,it looks fast aready!!
I will post pictures soon as I can get Gary or Sean orDavid to do it. Dave deserted today, went to Daytona for the 5oo.All the scraps from this project go into a boat for the little ART drivers. It will be a real composite boat,so we dont know what it will be.

Further note on the composite boat for the kids: Dad covered a shaped piece of styrofoam with resin and let it dry. When it dried, Dad carried it over to me and said, "I think this will work".
So, I immediately smashed it into Ian's arm and then Dad's chest. The thing worked perfect - broke apart and didn't hurt either one of them...well they both said "ouch!" and "cut it out!"... but I think it'll work for sponson tips, etc.
We've got a second test planned for Monday but we have to wait for Dan to show up...

Road signs make great transom protectors! Just cut it to size and turn the painted side in toward the transom when you install it.
I mean... that's what I've heard. I'd never do something like that!

Jeff,
Those would be Coke cans not beer :)
If you look close there are 2 250 hydros, a 500 hydro, 2 kayaks hanging from the ceiling and a b mod/ old 125 hydro kit hanging on the wall. That's Garys 125 boat under construction and Seans CSH hiding in the stack of plywood....
What you cant see is the other 250 hydro, 2 350 hydros and the 700 capsule boat outside, I think this place is like the elephant graveyard for boats. :D Then there's dads house where all the stock stuff hangs out.

I remember going to pop Augustines house when I was just a little kid :D there is a lot of history behind the Augustine race camp in Landover Maryland :) Its like a musem of boat racing history, the Denton Maryland race posters from 1955 !

Nice looking MJR Hull !!! A Mini DA sander works well to get that nasty epoxy off where the deck will not cover the glue line at the frame level. Otherwise Acetone works right after you install the framing. Just don't le tit run into the structural portion of the Epoxy, West Tells me it weakens it a ton, I tested that and it does indeed take away about 3/4 of the strength.
I love the lines on the front where your deck will meet the bottom. Nice curves, kinda like a nice lady, gotta have nice curves !!!:D

thanks. take your time when handling and placing the material. lots of experimenting and practice. i use a aircraft laminating epoxy. west system also makes a high end laminating epoxy.

I just made my first attempt at carbon fibre application on
the coaming for my new boat. It looks and feels very strong,
but the finished product had small openings between the
fibers that exposes the laminate underneath.
Is the aircraft/high grade epoxy that much different that the
105/205 west system?
I was hoping for a better finished result, but I suppose for a
first attempt it worked pretty well.
Any tips would be helpfull.

the laminating resins wet out the fibers much easier than 105 west system. you can try sanding the part and coating it with west 105/207 to get a smoother finish. wash the residue off your part with warm soapy water before sanding, it will save time, effort and sandpaper. also besure to coat the resine with a uv protectant.
good luck

Does carbon fiber burn in the sunlight?
I ran a carbon fiber boat all year in the sun and it didnt seem to be affected, maybe because of the resin?
Bill Blackwell
02-26-2004, 06:54 PM
Hey Kyle,
You need to take a closer look at the condition of the carbon fiber on those 2 carbon boats you've been driving. They are degrading from UV, but I don't think it's serious...yet.
Are you and your dad building anything new for this year? Say hi to your dad for me.

"Does carbon fiber burn in the sunlight?

No, UV doesn't degrade carbon fiber, at least not RE lifetime of a raceboat. But UV kicks the poop outta WEST resin. WEST has a new resin that r4esists UV, but I would still coat the part with a UV blocking finish. Life of WEST in the sun is less than one racing season - starts to turn white and then just powders/flake off.

Matt,
Thanks for the reply. I normally use the West 105/207 as the
sealer for the outside of the boat then coat that with a high
grade varnish (for UV protection) and have been pleased with
the final results. I like a natual wood finish, plus much easier
to match than paint once an OOPS  happens.
My new boat I plan to use Imron Clear instead of Varnish.
I want the natural finish to look wet all the time and I believe
the Clear will do that.
Will you suggest some brands of laminating epoxy that I could
use for my projects?
By the way I used a Vac Bag for the first time on this project.
Amazing way to clamp things. I know not new technology, but
a first for me and it was impressive.
One last question please. The Laminating resin, does it reduce
the dispersion of the carbon fibres, to achieve a tight weave
result?
Thanks alot for the great advice,
Dennis 21Z
Again the ability to communicate here with other racers and the
sharing of information is priceless!
Thanks Dan! :D :D :D

there are many different manufactureres of laminating resins. lots of different potlifes and working times. see your supplier to see what is available to you. the west system laminating resin is really nice. i cant remember the name/number right now, but i will get back to you.

Matt,
Excellant work, I have waited a long time to see someone do what you are doing with the molds. You have the vision and the ability to take boat building to a whole new level. Why would anyone want a wood boat when you can produce these.
Faster turn around build time, more durable in accidents and will consistantly hold its shape year after year.

When we are talking about taking these steps, we must not forget about Bob Trolian. he has been building fiberglass and carbon fiber boats for many years now. He is the first true innovator when it comes to bringing this technology to our sport. Although certainly, Matt is taking it to the next level. Nice work.

here is a pic of the feh after it blew over. note there is no rear cowl. i think some aligator is going to have a nice new home. as light as carbon fiber is, its specific gravity is heavier than water. next cowl will have some foam floatation. did any one take a picture of the boat with the rear cowl? i video taped the blow over, as soon as i figure out how to post it you can watch it.

Matt,
Rig worked very well. Was able to jack motor much higher and largest wheel really started to come on Sunday. Longer length (77") and tall tower/setting motor back really helped offset lift in 30H foot. Will now work on moving farther up in boat (will pull wheel 6" extension and move throttle up).
My blowover was in A-mod/Webster--gust hit in middle of turn and could not back out in time.. Managed to put throttle hand through deck (easy fix). Motor ok.
Got a really nice photo of Arlte rig from guy selling photos from Sat. A little price'y but very nice shot. Will try to down size and post when we get home. Did you get any shots?
Still in Palm Coast waiting out weather man!!

Hey, I was just looking at all the cool photos you guys have posted and was thinking. When I wrecked a B&H hydro a while back I found that someone had written something on the inside of the right sponson chine. It read "Way to go shmuck!" being a boat builder I understand the use of the spring clamps and the level, but what was that heavy duty hammer lying on the deck of the CSH used for? Assisting the snug fitting pieces or perhaps an attitude adjuster for critics who wander into the shop???? :) LOL

Funny thing about this hammer discussion. I was watching a show on Discovery Channel not long ago called "The Great Biker Build Off" and Billy Lane, from Florida, built a bike that had a spot for a hammer. I don't remember exactly what he called it, but I'd never seen or heard of anything like it before. Supposedly, in the 50's and 60's bikers used the hammers to get even with cars who cut them off or flipped them the bird, etc...
Lesson learned, I'll be sure not to give Sean the bird while I'm racing with him this summer in CSH. :D

Sean,
The Ropers look GREAT!!! Can't wait to check them out up close and personal.
You make sure your careful at Camden because I want to be the first one to put a racing strip on the new wood, one old Roper to a New one.:D
As for the hammer, Joe, you shouldn't worry. Sean has bad aim for one thing and would probably pull his kill switch on the wind up.
See you guys at Franklin!!

Here's a pic of my boat sittin' in Bill Pavlick's garage after I dropped it off. This old B&H needs a new deck and a couple little repairs here and there. Bill was nice enough to take on this job for me, and I sure appreciate it.
Yes, I'm sure a lot of you folks recognize the old Palmquist paint job.

Jeff,
Is/Was this Jerry's DSH that the bottom blew out at the Merc Challenge at Grand Rapids, 1988/89ish?
If so, I saw it happen! The only thing worse would be stuffing it at 75+mph. Something I did in 89 at the Lawenceville, PA National during the test session in BSH(20ci). I was screwed up for about 3 weeks with wiplash headaches and a bruised sturnum.
Jerry was banged up for awhile also!!
Bill P 3rd does nice work!

Steve, This is the boat that Jerry blew the bottom out of. I was told that Mike Pavlick put the new bottom on it. I think when I get it back from Bill I'll call it a B&H&P.

Hey guys,
Here are some pics of a new 25SSH/C Hydro that I am building. This is the one that is for sale with a 25XS. I figure it should be ready by next weekend.
If someone wants the boat only I am not going to cut the transom down until it sells in case someone wants it for C etc...

hey Darrell, I notice something different on the top deck near the dash? Is that a new design air intake air something???

That is very interesting looking. He might want to take a look a that though because 'through the hull air passages' are illegal in runabouts. Wouldnt want the guy to get thrown out in his first race for somthing like that.

Air intakes are not legal on stock runabouts. Air must go over the boat, not through it.

I called Pete, he said it is a design thing, there are no holes that go though the deck.

Darrell,
Next time you talk to Pete, let him know that there are some races in his area. I know TRORA has a race only 1/2 hr south in Alexandria, KY and IOA ran one at Zanesville, OH last year.
Not to take anything away for the Marathons but if I built a new boat, I would want to run it as much as I could.
Nice looking piece of wood:D

Took delivery of my new CSH Arltralite on Friday, and yes it snowed on the way home!!!
Unloading the boat off of the roof racks was a joy, I could almost have done it on my own.
A big thanks to Matt for putting it all together, now if the 3 feet of ice covering my favorite testing spot would leave I could try it out!

I know that it is a little late but I wanted to justify the " If you thought RaceCrafts were scary remark. I convinced Paul Seeger to buy a RaceCraft A runabout because I am a fan of the boat , and he did, and he did the most magnicent 720 anyone had ever witnessed at Crystal Lake in 2001( it was really awesome) So he thought that it was all boat and not his hopped up adrenalin, over excited, over anxious over driving. So in fact it was a driver related comment and not a boat builder knock.
Bob "Race Craft" Trolian builds an awesome boat. Bob Rocks!!!!!!
