I may have a 650 fishing motor sitting in my pile of motors. Is that wat you are looking for?

I thought the 650 was supposed to be the worst motor Mercury ever made. Why would you want that?

I have been told the nobody had gotten the 650 to really run.... I guess it is challenge to see if I can make it run or not. I thought that If I could find a 650 cheap enought and with my knowledge of building D-Mods, I would see!! Could be a bust... but could be fun too!!

Eric,

Could be! I havent seen one in quite a while. I remember that it was a (4) cylinder 60 cubic inch block and had a hybrid mag pointless ignition system called "Lightning Energizer" and used one of the first switch boxes to control ignition. Let me know what you would want for it including shipping charges.

would you want the whole motor or just P/H ? It would save on shipping.

The 650 XS was the race motor and Jerry Wienandt spent years and big $ geting his to go fast.

He even said that if someone spent the time an OMC could go faster.

the 650/700 3cyl was the worst Merc motor built (unless only used on a light boat setup).

the 650 4cyl was a good motor.....

OK, good call. I was confused there a little because I didnt know they made the 650 in 3 and 4 cylinder models. I thought it was only 3.

Thanks for the replys....

I did not know that Mercury had mad a 650 XS. Do you know any particulars on this engine?

I am looking for the 4 cylinder engine and would want just the power head and ignition system.

Hey Cheney,

Thought that I would hear from you eventually!!! Dennis Westby keeps telling me the same thing... I just thought that it would be interesting and a challenge to see if I could get a 650 (4) cylinder to run. I have a couple of ideas that I learned from the drag boys on building compression in bigger bores and want to see if they work in our application.... Remember the old adage that there is "No replacement for displacement"!!! AT 60 cubic inches, one would think that you should be able to extract some kind of power....

IN MY OPINION IF YOU WANT TO TRY THE 650 MORE POWER TO YOU. YOU ARE PROBABLY AWARE THAT THERE IS A SMALL AND A LARGE BORE 650. SMALL BORE = 60 CI AND LARGE BORE 62 CI. i HAVE SEEN A 650 RUN DECENT ON A FER, THE LOW END PUNCH THEY HAVE MAKES THEM REALLY GOOD OUT OF THE TURN OR ON SMALL COURSES. THEY LIKE TO GRUNT AND NOT SPINN TO THE MOON OR THERE RODS HAVE A TENDENCY OF EXITING THE CASE.
I PERSONALLY HAVEN'T MESSED WITH THEM MUCH BUT I HAVE TAKEN THEM APART AND THERE IS A LOT OF POTENTIAL THERE, EXCEPT THEY ARE HEAVY. MY TWO CENTS.

Tom,

Give Cory Sampson a call. I gave him two 650 60's last year that were sitting my my garage. I think Rod Burton still has one sitting on the old windwalker, but that was before my time.

Hey Brian,

Thanks for the thought, I never think of Cory.. He should be the first one on my list. I wonder if he would also have some big wrist pin rods for my long haul 44.
