we heard you were copying her old boat, she really misses the boat i think it was just tooo heavy. do you plan on running any apba races, or perhaps even stateline races? kevin

Mike built the yellow boat with fir sides and floor and these will have lighter 10 mil okume sides and floors which should save considerble weight, also some weight saving in the sponsons, each should weight around 125lbs.

isn't 125 still a bit heavy? the new karelson she has is quite a bit lighter than that. i'm a pro guy so i don't know much about these things. kevin

well if I weigh 200lbs wet with a helmet and kevlar and the motor weighs 100lbs I would still need the boat to weigh 140lbs min to make weight in CSH, Tim Holmans high sided Karelsen weighs in at over 135lbs and seems to be very competitive. he weighs 205lbs without any gear on. I would be very suprised to find out Ed built a CSH less than 120lbs seeing how he told Mike that it is difficult to get the "true" weight of a CSH less than 130 without compromising the strength of the boat and still maintain the integrity of the bottom and flying surface. When Mike built 143R straight off of the table it weighed about 135. I know that this boat has been in several wrecks and I am sure that the all of the repairs and extra glue etc. has added a lot of weight to it.

Been a long time since those days on the pond @ elk river
see ya Kev

that is pretty thick for the sides isn't it" I agree a CSH should be in the 130lb range.........

Actually 10 mil sides @ the height that we're building these boats ( 21" at the cockpit sides) Is standard for a high side Karelsen. When Mike built 143R it was lofted in on a 20 inch side. Pat Kelley's boat, (38R,) is a high sided Karelsen with a 21" side, Tim Holman's boat , is 22" high with a honeycomb side. When Mike was working with Ed on the 143R project Ed sugested the fir for the high sides to keep it from blowing out when coming into contact with the pilots hip. We have decided to keep the looks of the okume and add a doubler on the right inside of the cockpit side to add strength. The higher you go with the sides, the stronger it has to be. We have calculated the difference in weight in these boats and have come to the conclusion that a difference in 1.5 to 1.7 pounds is an acceptable varience in the completed project and we are willing to accept that.

you make some great points, like i said i just work on them i'm not too awfully familiar with weights and such. i weigh 200 and i make c weight in sheryls new boat, so your theory works even in my application. i just know i picked up her boat over my shoulder, when i was moving it to the shop to be painted, it didn't seem that heavy to me. got another elk river run in ya. kevin

Hey Slater,

Who are the other two boats for, does Mike have customers or is he just building them on speculation?

Is he interested in building any D boats?

My CSH / OSY400 / 125cc hydro weighs in at 90 lbs. It has been raced in all three classes. This boat is basically a Bezoats CSH kit with a few modifications. Shanon does a great job on these kits. You can build a light boat using thin plywood skins, narrow stringers, big holes!!!!!, and composite / carbon fiber technology without compromising the structural integrity of the boat. My new 125cc hydro will be less than 90 lbs. That's why their called 'Hobart Ultra Lights' !!!!! See you at the races... Dean Hobart.:D

After visiting this shop I can Guarantee you any type of beer would be a big seller! Also make sure John posts a picture of one of the boats on the elevator(how many shops can boast that?) Hey John I'm guessing yours is the one that is upside down! Watch for the plans they used to be featured on "Antiques Roadshow" someday soon. Ed Karelson originals, similar in appearance to do***ents used to loft the Mayflower.
Terrific quality control at this operation. A fine example of the results of an American public school education!

Are you building these boats in a jig?Havn't seen one
in any of the pictures.Boats do look good,Are you going
to be able to run 20SSH with them.
Tom

Hi Tom, when building these Karelsen boats you don't use a jig. you start with the sides fastened together with the motorboard and dashboard to form a "box" Level it up on the table or saw horses and start attaching the frames. At every step you are constantly checking for true alignment. We are going to set in the sub frames with a lazor that Mike has picked up and is eager to try, we'll post pix of the process. Taking a little break right now, had to get back to work and the family. Also these boats should work great in 20ssh. We're building them an inch wider, (37") and running the traps all the way back but lower at the transom, they should pack more air at a slower speed but maintain good stability in the staights. Take care.

Hi Kev, Take a look at a map and tell me what you think about Rat Lake, I've been there and feel it would be a perfect lake to have a joint race on. It is located near Brewster. I will bring the issue up today. Thanks John 962R
