Welcome the newest addition to the Northwest flatties. 1972 Javelin, set up by Al Lapointe, driven by Kip Brown and others. Been under a tarp for a couple years. A touch of glass work, some serious cleaning a few nuts and bolts and it will be good to go.

A few more. Seems this boat had a drop through fin on the left chine at the drivers seat. According to LaPointe, this was here long before the SS 400 put on the outer fin. I was told this worked great till about 100 on the straights when it created too much lift. The bottom has since been changed and is supposed to work great.

I wish I was opening a boat shop, Kinda looks like it. The worst part is there is another one you cant see.

As for power??? the project has turned "Top Secret"

The plate is cool, its one piece that has cuts to the back of the boat. Its thick and has to be a B to down plate it.

The word in the wind is a big block might be going into it, I don't think thats a good idea, it would turn that little boat into a slug:raincloud:

I sure hope that Ror keeps that Al LaPointe boat with the traditional small block E-boat motor. Some people would like to stick in a big block but the boat ran fine in the E-boat with a small block. Dave Weber told me that it was always behind the Marlins but it may have been the excellent driving of the Weber Bros. I'm sure there will be more said on these findings. Jimmy D.

Nice boat E-Motion Looks very clean.

Had a nice talk with Kip Brown. He had alot of seat time in this boat. He also got wet out of it once as well. Got alot of good plate set up info, prop info, rpm info, etc etc. He also said this boat needs a small block. He said the set up that was in it was the best of all, they spent alot of time testing diff set-ups over the years.

Fiberglass repairs complete. Epoxe Resin poured into the chine crack while boat is on its side then layer upon layer of glass grindings and hair dropped in and packed from the bottom up. A seringe worked well to add a layer of resin one squease at a time and them mixed into the cavity. Under deck plywood reattached with mat and epoxe.
Robin spend 3 hours cleaning cootees. May bring it to Waites without motor if anyone is interested. Looking for an 85 or later Ford 302.

Charley has some improvements: chine repair neccessary from the addition of balsa filler to extend the chine lower to the bottom (used to be an inch higher stock and now lowered app 2") and a crash cracked this area.
Many hours were spent carefully applying epoxe resin via a vet hyperdermic needle one bead at a time and stuffing glass filings and mat strands down the entire fill area. Of course this would not be possible if Jimmie had not loaned his boat rotisery to let gravity set those materials in the correct spot. The crack appeared to be 2 to 3inches deep and 28 inches long.

Note, the whole boat bottom and sides has been blueprinted (filled and reformed) with that pink stuff (body bondo) and there is where the problem lies, bondo absorbs water. Peelin goin on everywere thats 1/8 to 1/4" deep. This all has to be ground out and replaced with figerglass reinforced marine filler. I have more itching going on than a poison ivy victim! Robin and I are quite excited to bring this one off prototype to life! I found a 1965 sbc 327, shouldnt this boat deserve a period correct engine?

Looking great Boyd. Im ready to prime/paint anytime. All my weekends are free for a while. I moved that wood boat out so I have plenty of room here or I can come there and spray those areas. Just let me know.

A period correct 327 would be great, but I keep buying parts for this 350??? Pistons came last week. ARP fastners came yesterday. Crank should be done next week. After the short block is together, Ill finish the heads.

Paul Grichar also drove this boat. Talked to the Legend yesterday and he had already heard of Robins good fortune so he talked and talked. Seems Al came to Burley with this craft 2 days early for testing (which anyone can do) and Paul helped with the set up. There were rudder-steering issues I am told and Kip raced it that weekend. Anyone know how it fared against competition?

Incidently Win Phillips from Wyoming recenty recovered from surgery and is now doing well. He was puttering around the Gritches' engine shop.

Gearbox is apart, 12 degree #62500-2. Wonder what the 2 means? Looks good inside except some rust and salt water residue in he water passage, why does anyone run water thru these in an open boat? Whooops forgot this vdrive is way under the dash, outta sight and cool air! Oh, the top bearing spacer was ingraved 'Bottom' and the bottom one was markd 'Top'! They are 18% so you think that mild 350 needs a different gear to start with? I do looking at the prop.

Does anyone have some 12 degree 22s, 25s or 29s? I would trade 12% 12s! Or, I have a set of 10degree 25s! Anyone?

Right, here is moresaid: The Webers never beat it according to Al. Only Tom Mielke ever came close. You on prescription drugs or just found a new stirrin stick? 29 straight victories, and many records in its day. Last I saw it drag racing, it had way more oil in the bilge than in the pan!

In this shot notice the filled slot hole where the side skag had been. http://i629.photobucket.com/albums/uu13/monaandror/P6260084.jpg
Al told us, this is Ted Jones idea and looks similar to what it currently on SS400, the record smashing Jones of Dave Villwock. It's been accused of being a hydrofoil with exterior rudder and side skag.
Point is, this boat had it in 1970! Way ahead of its time with many other tricks like the blueprinted bottom and sides, dropped stringer, hydroplane steering, movable cente cav plate, etc. Still learning myself but if anyone is interested in a private showing, come by and see for yourself.

That side fin worked incredible up to a certain speed,, according to Al and at 7000rpm with that 18 gear it lifted the side, so it was redesigned decades later and installed outside the SS400 hulls flat surface on a special raised tiny sponson looking addition. Interesting?
Hydro hardware on a flat? Dave told me that with additional capsule weight and innovations, he had to drastically change flats hardware and its locations. Then after resetting almost every course record he was protested by almost all his competition, so I have read on the web. Maybe Dave will chine in.

Our 'Charley' boat is shorter than that boat by about 12", I think. So no capsule for us and the 80mph rule will keep the boat quite stable and flat running.

Al also stated that Kelly Stocklin also drove this boat. And Paul Grichar tested it at Burley with the hydro plane steering. What boat hasnt Paul driven???

Altered Thoughts
09-28-2010, 11:24 AM
Wonder what the 2 means. Answer-- fix with both eyes open..might have something to do with 12 degree--what ever you do don't put 10 degree gears in like I did on the 10 degree box I bought from a racer guy. JImmy D.

Not a shortened Jones copy like I had thought, Steve Jones built the special Javelin mold for OUTBOARDS, then sold it to Al. Al produced them and outfitted Hondos to run very hard in circles.

Kelly had two early Jones or Javelins named 'CircleJerk I' and CircleJerk2' maybe this boat is really home!

Dave Bough had one of the fastest around, so I am told.

Wow, you did get busy! That leaky tire does not have a obvious leak at the bead or tread, so it may have just been low and sitting didnt help it. I checked with soap and no bubbles. Love the chrome fenders.

Oh, the fuel tank had alum fittings fused together at the feed line so it broke. Nobody believes in antiseize or non-hardening sealer when tightening 2 soft metals together, I guess. So off to the Welders to fix it.

Dave, Robin is running whatever Ror is, she prefers the GPS.

OK, rotated the boat for final fairing and blocking. Thought I could get some Featherfill on today but NO, more delamination between the added Balsa filler and thin outside laminate cloth. After this one was filled, I sanded and prepared once more for spraying then the other baseball size one appeared near the bow! Dang it. Sure glad this boat didnt ram docks like ours do it would have been way worse! Epoxe Resin takes about 4 hours to set at 60 degrees. Another 10 hour day...Turkey soup for lunch, Turkey for din din. Need nap!
Every seam-crack where filler was used to blend in hardware has cracked and had to be filled with epoxe. You can not just let fly with the sander since the contour and blueprint job wont allow that....you have to use three different pad sizes to avoid removing purposeful NONFLAT areas!
The side shot shows where the major crack was that had to be resealed with the boat on its edge....you can see how straight the side should be now with all the feathering and block sanding. I'll do more after the filler is applyed but why not use the layers and layers of paint, primer, and bondo already there!
Can you count the different coats??? I think the green is gel coat backing color. Goes between the white gelcoat and first layer of glass in the mold.
Check out the unusual chine, cant wait to see how Charley turns!

Jerkizoid
11-28-2010, 10:40 PM
Is the baseball sized delamination or damage from a hit of some sort. Notice in the center lower left in the green area a small yellow spot, this is weak if you tap it so holes were drilled and epoxe forced into the void and then a weight taped to the repair to flatten the bulge. You can also see the pink bondo smoothing the balsa-glass dropped chine beginning.

More problems, while block sanding, two more bumps showed up in the chine area that was filled with balsa and glass. 4 hours more of work and phone calls to Al and Kip. Estimate cause is that side crack that wasnt repaired correctly allowed water into the false chine swelling the glass and wood. Kip said, "grind some more and top coat. Should be ready for final primer next weekend. Meanwhile our competition thinks we wont make it for the first race, OK, but Burley is a must, we could see an E class possibly.

Ok, Ror, by the way, you see the number of hits for Charley? Compare that to your K28 post.....What does this suggest?? Charley is being watched, either by Security Products fans or the SE competition, or others???
I would think a blown famous Geottle boat with 'Epidemic' in the serial would be way more interesting to view. Maybe its the popular Charley name triggering the hits?? What do I know? Zip:raincloud:

I had a very smart hull designer check Charleys bottom pictures and he said that inverted anti trip chine will work but balance of a boat so short and heavy is critical. Maybe an adjustable seat track?? Or deck riders? It is a runabout you all...

Bottom done, speedcoat going on thanks to Dave. Had not planned on speed coating it but that saved shooting the cream white on what otherwise would be covered anyway. the epoxe primer and fiberglass top coat should be enough to stop all that gel coat peeling-flaking.
The original motor has been found but it is all rebuilt with high buck stuff and too pricey for our budget. So the hunt continues for a reasonable engine we can afford.
I only need a low compression sbc, might have a line on a 327 cheap. I would trade some bbc stuff if anyone out there has some spare small stuff.

Forgot to mention, after all the vinyl was removed, more cracks had been covered up with electrical tape, and numbers......on the transome and left side that we were leaving alone. So, here I go again. Should have it off the rotiserie by weekend and my eliminator inside! Ya hoo.

Thanks Dave, I found the perfect tool for scuffing the speed coat! A Fine grit drywall plaster sanding sponge! It conforms to the bends on the chine and leaves a shiny silver smooth finish. Plastic gloves also help.
Dave has the answer for those wanting to coat for less! His Gallon should do 6 or more bottoms after thinning. I used mineral spirits since the label suggested it for a longer drying-bonding time. The stuff was rolled on to imitate car undercoating tar!

Other news regarding the E class is fresh in Daves mind, now if we can just keep competitors from using some trick sbc stuff like 14 degree heads or gobs of crate motor hp!
Heck, are we the only two getting prepared for the SE legal APBA class?? Dave, you might list motor specs as you know them!

20 hours over weekend and the bow eye and steering is fixed. Today I applied the vinyl ester resin and cloth to the stringer, it had torn loose the last 32 inches forward of the dash.
Nursing a Smashed knuckle from pounding rusted set collars off but otherwise still smiling:no:.
Al called to cheer me up while I complained that who ever it was who last worked on Charley's steering, or bow eye should be sent home without pay!:poke: And some reckless fool was drag racing this at 90 plus???:boat:

Come on guys, the bow eye backing block was split and 'Siliconed' to the glass hull so the stainless eye was tearing thru the glass!! I'd hate to have tie a rope to this to refloat the boat! Bing-a-Bong...Who-be-Whatskee..just Busted thee?

Lastly, The steering pulley mounts would wiggle back and forth including the steering shaft! The deck supports were cracked and loose plus when cable steering was installed, no one filled the larger mount holes from the push pull system in the dash.

I guess the lesson is, before planning on dropping the mill in and mash the gas, start from the bow eye and rebuild your way back to the rudder......or:raincloud:

Forgot in the above rant that the steering post, little bitty guy 4" long, was held onto the dash with ONE 1/4" stud while the other two were just plain gone! Not broken off, just missing. Threads were OK so they didnt break off and float away, they were never put IN it!!! Ouch.

If you notice the floors in this shot, the cav lock out handle is mounted into a 1/2 delaminated stringer. See the white area around the 4 bolts? Now if you go to the other side and see that square mounting blue box (God only knows what this was for made out of 1/2" alum) that area has the same white coloring. So out came the epoxe and wood clamps, and 1/2 dowels, and the hammer, and the grinder, and the glass cloth, and about 20 weekend hours spent starting the total floor restoration......Gee, it looked as if one could just bolt in a motor and go:wallbang: Oh Contrair Michelle my Bell, contrair!

Lucky I had just purchased another virgin Casale last Fall for $200 thanks to Marc tipping me of its availability. Small drive to Coulee City produce one that still had its original 12% gears and ALL of its original bolts and gaskets! Dont find this too often.

That start button panel will give way to the original drivers seat since Doc returned one of Robbie H. owned sprint car polished one mounted on an adjustable bracket. Charlies' passengers will ride where Kip and Kelly once sat!:thewave:

If ya notice the floor, it looks bad, but other than minor cracking, it should shine with another coat of glass once more, the holes drilled through it were correctly reglassed.
Those rusty bolts are a tip off!!!!! All bolts going thru any wood were GRADE 5 mild steel cad plated!!!! Maybe stainless wasn't readily available in 1970s? You know what happens to these dont we!!!! Rust, then ROTTED wood!
Yes friends, every hole drilled into the stringers had to be drilled out to hit fresh wood, and plugged with dowels. 3/8 bolts were drilled to 1/2 and 3/4" for the epoxed plugs and 5/16 went to 3/8 hardwood! This makes it difficult to drill back out but 1/2 of them will NOT be used again. In otherwords stuff was moved around and or not-necessary in my humble opinion.
Those sling, crane launching brackets will go, to be replaced with seat brackets.
Sure hope that shaft log doesnt leak, its the only piece left installed with the skegs. Strut now has stailess hardware.

Oh, dont ask me how the cav hardware to stringer bracing was made, please!
Ror took some stringer photos Saturday on his visit and you can see the bolt holes resemble shot gun blasts at close range! Post away buddy!

I guess, I am relating this stuff NOT to insult those who had hands on this incredible boat but to make you all very aware to never judge a book by its cover! From the above pictures, it would appear, to simply primer the chipped spots and drop a motor IN! Contrair My Bell, contrair. How do you spell this Frenchie?

Oh, look at ths picture of the steering pulleys, see the holes drilled on the top of the stringers? they intersect holes drilled horizontal as w ell and were filled with silicone, not wood plugs! Below that, stringer delamination! Adverse steering quirks friends!d And the big hole where the cables goes thru, NOT glassed wood rot!

Where the stringers attach to the transom, cracked glass covered in 1/8" of grease and oil. Typical but add another hour of repair and 6 oz of epoxe.

Dont anyone, ask me what's taking so long, palease:ziipit:

Another back twister, was the area the down pedal was mounted, see the blue silicone that didnt fill the exposed wood holes? And the most important holes, the v-drive mount bolts was rotten also and had to be plugged :wallbang: So, I RE-RIG the entire boat!

Hey Ror, I think you could have been a used car salesman AND this boat may be a touch older.
A few fans of this boat mentioned they had seen it run in 69, maybe someone can chine in if there were two Charleys, or just this one.
This one had a red deck and white bottom and of course the side skeg similar to Mr. Vilwocks SS/PS400.
It was a big encouragement when I got this call informing me of how fast, and in the lead this boat was. Of course now, with the junk yard motor, our goal is to build a boat for under $2000 and have 20 or 30 hours of sheer fun to somewhat off set my 300 hours of sheer misery and itching:wallbang:

in the last picture the large crack between the stringer and bottom? That was 2 feet under the deck extending all the way to the pointy front. Very tight space but ester resin and 3" cloth fixed it. Possibly caused by a flip which also tore the plywood deck support. Steering was also rebraced so it couldnt wiggle around! Newer 12 degree v-drive is almost mounted, using 6 stainless 5/16 bolts instead of 4 plated 3/8s bolts (two top ones almost missed the stringer).
This Casale box was located in Coulee City Wa. at a yard sale and had almost 0 running time. All bearings gaskets, gears, and bolts were original, as far as I could tell it had never been apart! And, its mounting plates indicated it was in a deep V style hull.
My Sharks' Large 8 bolt prop shaft coupler sure helped aligning the new 6 bolt pattern that now is drilled into virgin glass and stringer wood. Gear choice is a secret so dont ask!:usflag:

V-drive is remounted in perfect alignment less whirlaway! Hydraulic throttle will dampen the raw Lion like power of its truck towing power!:porch New alum coupler slips in with its 7" key with ease. New 2" angle alum runs from v-drive to engine under the dropped stringer for added strengh. That was the weak stringer injected with steroids. This also provides a mount for seat, drive line guard cross member and misc controls.

Forgot to take it off the old one:eek: Now, that's somewhere in Calif.:claphands:

So for the day I thought I would mock up the flywheel, motor plate, and alt pulley for fit! Lost one hour grinding the starter nose hole in the block plate larger, they discovered the bolt pattern on the plate was OFF! The block dowels didnt even line up!

Thanks sugar plum. Yes, big block header braces will work IF you want them to, and are quite necessary since the 1 1/2 tubing is very thin. Flowmaster 2 in 1 collectors solved the rusted out former collectors.
Hey Kevin, you dig my angle finder checking out the 2 angles of the vintage flame arrestor?? Thought so! Wiring & gauge is temporary!
That front mount was not the original for the boat so I had to add material for two reasons: I want to slide the motor forward or back to balance the boat with the power reduction required for SE. I dont think it will carry the nose with less punch and my prop gearing. Secondly, that dropped stringer on the drivers side needed additional strength so the bottom rail was added and those angle additions are bolted to that bottom rail as well as the original 3X2 inverted top rail. Below this, was all the torn damaged stringer wrapping, now filled with new glass. I dont want the stringers to twist at all but stay solid for 4 more decades!
Most fast racers of today rely on full length engine rails to stiffen narrow stringers and keep bottoms straight for more speed. Lance Faulkner, SS70 Kilo record holder could extract a few miles per hour from this concept alone. It's a labor of Love for the first all glass Javelin (modified Jones).

Look who is throwing mud, Mr. Showboat himself. When was the last time your Primadonna b-terrific-boats got wet or were even seen? Ya ya ya they are for sale cause you wont drive them maybe you should install an SE motor and take on the 'Girls', if you dare! Show us how versital those b-ss are.
So, what, I saved $400 with paint used on tractors and 'Got her done'!
I had to rub and sand very hard to get a shine...What a slam! Jerk Buddy??
Maybe you should wander off campus and see Charley for your self before slamming it as NOT show worthy? I know for a fact that it features lots of hard work by,, ME in my effort to breath new life into a lovable legendary racer as well as keep family harmony. You sound a little like Jackson, possibly the ultimate SHOWBOATER, Please dont let him rub off on you now you live in the neighborhood.

Ok, so the wheels and tires didnt work. When Boyd added the motor to the boat the trailer almost hit the ground, so now we have to get new leaf springs and different wheels and tires so the trailer doesnt drag on the ground, what the heck is up with that? So no testing at the Montana race this weekend! Bummer!:crazy:no::wallbang::opps::help:

Not so fast Lucy......Went to Antique Auto Ranch and found some 1930 something spring to repair the 1930 something original spring leafs, added a center bolt, pounded and pounded, got them apart, put 2 extra leafs in, now 10 total and found some rusted wheels with the right off set, and remounted the new 6 ply trailer tires and we are pushing it out into the daylight for trailer light wiring. If it tows, (now only 1/8" off square instead of 1 full inch) I will head out early tomarrow and finalize the assembly at Trout Creek! There should not be 2 races in a row without flats! Boat needs the hydraulic throttle mount made, a fuel filter bracket fabbed (fuel tank has bits of alum inside), driveline shield mounted, seat brace drilled, header collector welded on, opps, I wont make it! for watching here, I couldnt get you on your phone.....
Of interest, I just heard all the Nostalgia bunch that went APBA racing this weekend instead of Trout Creek were disqualified in first heat. That couldnt have been a fun day for them, and the live stream showed a flare being deployed to stop the leaders. Big course, big time problems, it would seem! They will be quite happy to return to Waites I would imagine. See all you hydro friends there!

Oh, the lights on the trailer are still messed up! New wiring and new led bulbs!!!!!! 3 hours of labor, down the drain, anyone need a hexed voo doo trailer? Cheap!

Neither of us was there but what I hear is that what happened was not the APBA's fault. That would be like blaming the bread for burnt toast. (heard that the other day and just had to use it).

As for your trailer, those LED lights can be a real pain. Try running individual grounds for each tail light all the way to the front. Worked for me in the past.

Minor problems with drive shaft seal leaking and a place to put the start up key, but as in the Schnell Racing Teams everything worked out after a major discussion. Boyd took first out , then Robeeen. Robeeen said it drives like a Cadillac , but since they don't own one I think she was trying to say Buick.. Races today with maybe 4 classes of flats. Jimmy D.

To my right is Robin perched on charlies' nose paddling in to kick some sense into me...? I won the foot race though, even with quick sand covering my boney toes. And that Dr. Drewsome tried tackling me for no good reason, jerk out raced him also! Looser

Thanks for the pictures, we had fun with no break downs and all the hard work really paid off so all we had to do is add fuel (1 1/2 gallons per heat) and adjust things.
We will need extensive testing to even think about getting into the 70s, probably never happen this year, hey, its a stock Blazer truck motor!!. Best speed was 68.4 with a tach bouncing 6400. The boat does like orange apex buoys though! Cant figure that one out....

Great weekend! SLORA rocks!

Best by Test, well now that just doesnt apply, now does it. We had 5 minutes of testing at 30 mph! Did you get this from the Marine bunch?
Try this out, speed formula:
6000 rpm X 1.18 gear X 15 pitch X .000947 = 100.57 mph
minus hull and prop inefficiency which should be app 20% = 80.4 mph! But the boat ran a high of 68.4 so thats 35% loss due to hull or prop slip! Here lies the problem. All my other props are too big so a 10 1/4 diameter stellings is on the way from a dear friend in Seattle! Now, on to fixing the leaky valves and oil pan.

Dont jump to conclusions, since wifie posted before the Ione report. This boat is amazing if an old fart like me can hug buoys (very close tight ones) and battle for position with a junk yard 60 mph Dog engine! All the quirks and bugs are now gone from its handling and this thing turns better than a Lavey, possibly better than a Marlin!!! Oh that will leave a mark!
Have water log manifolds coming so she can go lake cruising to her hearts delight and discover Charlies Magic! Call me crazy but, I kinda think, she wants to cruise the Burley Island though.//.////.,,./:crazy

Ya, I missed her too and I need to thank all the hydro family for the great potluck they provided, wow! Race, eat, rest, eat, race, race some more, eat some more, my cup of tea!
I had to return earlier than most with a singing deal at a retirement home but didnt make it on time, well I was on time for the eating afterwards!
Yes, Charlie has surpassed my expectations totally. I had fear that the fast hull would not handle at slower speeds, kinda like that big bad b-boat Beisemeyer. But that was not the case and I could turn way sharper than my old Lavey circle boat!
I had the pleasure of calling Al Monday to praise his little boat and admit our first handling issues at Ione were my own fault. Loose rudder keyway and quadrant, and wrong prop gear combination caused the hooking and chine dancing. Made him quite happy!
Now on to Sammamish where I hear a fairly large J-boat reunion will take place as well as Charlie sitting side by side with Als other legend, 'Gold Dust'! Hope all my E friends can make the tow there especially, you Charming Ghost 309! I guess you can camp in the pits, so I am.
